ICONOGRAPHY: January

Until today my desktop background had my 2016 October artwork adorning it. It feels ironic that someone as tested by time as me (think: running for trains / already behind on their - first ever - proper comms plan for 2018) to create such a timely project as a calendar each year, but I'm also someone who thrives on changing things up regularly and throwing myself into time-specific challenges. Sorta like trying to get the golden monkey on Jungle Run. What can I say, I'm a thrill seeker. A thrill seeker wielding desktop backgrounds who isn't afraid to use them.

To those of you who purchased my 2018 ICONOGRAPHY calendar, a huge big up, thanks and welcome to the team! It's been a difficult and complex year for my drawing practice so to have produced this has felt like a huge achievement, one that I am so pleased to be able to share with you over the next 12 months. After far too much internet-based research, each month features an iconic image from across different themes and industries, with January featuring the dashing rebel Che Guevara. Below is a little bit about why, as well as the full size desktop backgrounds for you to grab, either to match your physical calendar, or just make your virtual space 2018 ready.

Guerrillero Heroico — the famous photo of Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara by Alberto Korda — was cited by the Maryland Institute College of Art as “the most famous photograph in the world”. Initially released as a copyright-free image to inspire other revolutionary propaganda, a high-contrast monochrome graphic of Che’s face, created in 1968 by Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick, became a universally merchandised image, found on an endless array of items, including T-shirts, hats, posters, tattoos, and more, ironically contributing to the consumer culture Guevara despised. A major figure of the Cuban Revolution, Guevara’s stylized visage has become a ubiquitous countercultural symbol of rebellion and global insignia in popular culture.
