Whilst it may feel far from a perfect month in many ways, it doesn't take being a calendar maker to appreciate the neatness and serenity of a complete February block of Monday - Friday action. Apparently this only occurs once every 200 years, so I simply couldn't miss out on this historic moment, despite struggling to find any waking hours to dedicate to a, once again belated, creation.
After a day's Get Shit Done Sunday on CIVIC SQUARE recruitment on 31st January, I logged back in for a heady evening of tax returns submission (remember to get yours done earlier than this, kids), followed by a late night of drawing, motivated to make February's illustration happen to get this 2021 calendar ball rolling. It started slowly - you know the moment where you regret the entire undertaking, because it's an hour in and there's just some awkward patches of colour to show for it? - but the colours and my personal connection to this image led to me losing myself in the detail, rainbows and dreams of returning here, content in my own little world, until Naoshima Bath looked back at me from the page, in all of its eclectic, zesty, tiled glory, and I felt very whole.
This year's calendar is called HOW GREAT THOU ART, and is available for free as desktop backgrounds (or to use on zoom), as well as A4 pages that can be printed out each month from where you are.
This year theme aims to highlight a dozen examples of the great art beyond, to explore the beauty, charm and enduring mystery of how and why people make things to express themselves and share the things they love, to bring people together, to challenge structures that affect them and create visions of the world as they want it to be. It hopes to serve as a pertinent reminder that the world needs your earnest, experimental, courageous art, whatever weird and wonderful form it may take, more than ever. Read more
